UPCRC Illinois participates in Research@Intel Day

UPCRC Illinois joined dozens of Intel researchers to demonstrate the future of computing at Research@Intel Day 2009. To demonstrate the type of human-centric applications that drive UPCRC Illinois research, they chose the TEEVE project: Tele-Immersive Environment for EVErybody. TEEVE supports real-time collaborative physical activities among multiple, geographically distributed sites. Each site is equipped with multiple cameras that create 3D images of the participants in a virtual environment, thus allowing them to interact in that environment. At the Intel demo, participants in two separate spaces enjoyed engaging in a virtual lightsaber duel.

Last year, Intel and Microsoft funded the establishment of UPCRC Illinois with the goal of bringing parallel computing to mainstream consumer applications. The TEEVE project, led by UPCRC faculty Klara Nahrstedt and funded by the National Science Foundation, is one of many Parallel@Illinois research efforts. Parallel@Illinois represents the breadth of Illinois activities and resources invested in pioneering and promoting parallel computing research and education.
